Washougal man arrested after Ore. police chase is charged
ASTORIA, Ore. -- A man accused of leading Astoria, Ore., police on a high-speed chase after he was shot and wounded has been released from a Portland hospital, charged with attempted aggravated murder and ordered held on $10 million bail.
Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis also identified the man on Friday as Yevgeniy Savinskiy, 37, of Washougal. In all, the man is charged with 13 counts, including attempted assault, identity theft and felony attempt to elude.
The charges stem from an encounter with officers last Sunday at the Lamplighter Motel in Astoria.
The motel contacted police after finding items in the man's room. The district attorney says police found what appeared to be a gun silencer.
Officers returned later and say the man pointed a loaded handgun at them. Marquis said two officers fired, wounding Savinskiy, but the bleeding man drove off in his rental van. The chase down U.S. 101 reached speeds of 110 mph before he was stopped.
Police say they also recovered ammunition and an assault rifle. Marquis said the man told police he carried a gun because he had received death threats.
