Arraignment for Deer Park man charged with murder

SPOKANE -- The Deer Park man charged with aggravated murder and sexually violating human remains in the death of his ex-wife pleaded not guilty on Tuesday in Spokane.

Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty against Duane Starbuck. If convicted, the 47-year-old would be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Starbuck remains in jail on $1 million bail.

He's accused of strangling Chanin Starbuck, whose body was found Dec. 3 at her home in Deer Park. She is the mother of five children between ages 10 and 21.

Sheriff's detectives say she appeared to have been sexually assaulted and her body was positioned in a way to humiliate her.
