Gusty winds and some snow expected this weekend

Snow (sorry) could fall Sunday, and wind gusts of up to 45 mph are likely today.

EVERETT -- Nasty weather is in the forecast with gusty winds likely today and the possibility of some snow Sunday.

"If anything does fall, it's not going to last," National Weather Service meteorologist Johnny Burg said.

Traveling across the mountains could be particularly treacherous.

The weather service has issued a winter storm warning for the Cascade Range through 6 p.m. Saturday. Up to two feet of new snow is possible in the central Cascades with more farther north.

The snow level was expected to rise to 4,000 feet Friday and fall to about 1,500 feet overnight. That means the foothills could get another dusting of snow.

Cold air is predicted to move into the region over the weekend with snow levels at 500 feet or lower by Sunday.

Saturday could see wind gusts up to 45 mph, and a wind advisory is in effect, Burg said.

A wind advisory is issued when sustained winds of 30 to 39 mph or gusts between 45 and 57 mph are likely.

It also means small trees and branches could knock down power lines and trigger outages.

The winds should start to ease by Saturday night.

The cold air should hit on Sunday creating the possibility of inland snow.

A few inches are possible in areas within the convergence zone and away from the waterfront, Burg said. That often times means snow in south Snohomish County.
