Real estate appraiser Braden Gustafson has received MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute. He is the 13th appraiser to obtain this designation in Snohomish County. Gustafson has been appraising commercial properties for the Gustafson &Associates Everett office for six years.
The owner of Paradise Lake Nursery in Snohomish, Scott Pringle, has been installed as past president of the Washington State Nursery and Landscape Association. Pringle has served on the board at the chapter level, has been on the executive committee and has been acknowledged as WSNLA Member of the Year. He has served as trade promotions chairman, convention chairman and Emerald Expo chairman.
Union Bank has announced that Amanda Simula joined the residential wholesale team as an account manager for the bank’s Consumer Lending group. Based in Everett, Simula is responsible for building and managing mortgage broker relationships in the Northwest. She has 10 years of industry experience and previously served as a quality assurance manager for wholesale lending at World Savings.
Veteran mortgage banking executives Donn Costa and Debbie Steck have joined 1st Security Bank of Washington. Costa most recently held the position of executive vice president of Sterling Savings Bank and is past president of the Washington Mortgage Lenders and a board member of Seattle Mortgage Bankers. He has served on the advisory board of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Steck most recently held the position of senior vice president and operating officer of home lending at Sterling Savings Bank and was the chief operating officer and senior vice president of Golf Savings Bank.
Lynnwood Convention Center has appointed David Jones to be a new sales manager specializing in the corporate market. He is the former sales manager for Courtyard by Marriott in Lynnwood and is an ambassador of Economic Alliance of Snohomish County, a member of the Puget Sound Business Travel Association and an advisor on the Edmonds School District Distributive Education Clubs of America and the Future Business Leaders of America.
The Academy of General Dentistry has named Gary Heyamoto of Woodinville recipient of the 2012 Lifelong Learning &Service Recognition. It is the second time he has earned the honor. Heyamoto completed at least 2,100 hours of continuing dental education in 16 dental disciplines and completed at least 100 hours of dental-related community or volunteer service.
Tim Gray, owner of Pacific Stone Company in Everett, has been selected by peers as the Washington State Nursery and Landscape Association member of the year and supplier of the year. Gray helped to launch Treasure Island Marketplace at the Northwest Flower &Garden Show and has served on the WSNLA board of directors.
Monroe-based Pacific Earth Works has been recognized with two environmental landscape awards by the Washington Association of Landscape Professionals at the annual state convention at the Tulalip Resort and Casino in Marysville. The “Good Samaritan Green Roof” project received an award of merit in the commercial construction category. The “Marysville Getchell High School” project received an award of distinction in the public works category.
Workshops and classes
The Bothell office of the Washington State Department of Revenue is hosting a free workshop for new and small business owners on March 15 from 1-4:30 p.m. at the Everett Public Library, 2702 Hoyt Ave. Participants will learn about Washington excise taxes, reporting classifications, deductions, tax incentives, sales tax collection and record-keeping requirements. SMG, management company for the Lynnwood Convention Center, has partnered with local artists to hold The Artist Reception at the convention center March 6 from 6-8 p.m. The event is free. The exhibit features oil paintings on canvas and a variety of other mediums. The works have been loaned to the Lynnwood Convention Center by local Snohomish and King county artists and will remain on display through the summer.
Food Revolution Snohomish County, a movement aimed at encouraging growing, cooking, preserving and eating healthful food, is co-sponsoring the Celebration of Food Festival in Lynnwood. The free family event, where participants can taste, explore and experience food, is scheduled for May 20 at the Lynnwood Convention Center and will run from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. The Celebration of Food Festival is also sponsored by Edmonds Community College, the City of Lynnwood, Verdant and Cascade Harvest Coalition.

The Northwest Washington Electrical Industry has completed a demonstration solar photo-voltaic and electric vehicle charging carport. Funded by the Labor Management Cooperative Committee of Cascade Chapter NECA and Local #191 IBEW, both of Everett, the project was completed using solar modules and an inverter system manufactured by Silicon Energy in Marysville and a structure engineered and fabricated by Crystalite of Everett. The two-car carport is in Mount Vernon.
The State of Washington has locked in record-low interest rates on new money bonds totaling $563 million. The aggressive bids free up more than $7 million for lawmakers as they work to balance the 2011-13 budget. Series D bonds provide funds to pay for various capital projects, multimodal transportation projects, state buildings, public school skill centers and state programs for Columbia River Basin water supply development, farmland preservation, riparian protection and outdoor recreation.
