Nic Trout, 16, and three friends were riding motorized dirt bikes on the afternoon of March 10 in the Walker Valley Off-Road Vehicle area, southeast of Mount Vernon. The teen decided to make one more run before going home and headed out a few minutes ahead of the others. They followed and found Nic unconscious after he fell off of a 35-foot embankment.
Nic was airlifted to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center where he remains in intensive care.
Ryan and Dyann Trout of Lake Stevens learned their son's accident severely damaged his spine and caused fractures in his left shoulder, sternum and ribs.
"He's starting to recover," said Christen Lacic, a friend speaking on behalf of the Trout family. "He's not completely out of the woods but he's doing alright."
The Trout family is posting updates online about his day-to-day condition at www.caringbridge.org/visit/nicholastrout. Doctors expect to perform surgery on his shoulder once he is in stable enough condition, Lacic said.
Nic is an experienced dirt bike rider who loves the outdoors, wakeboarding, snowboarding and playing football. He is a junior at Marysville Pilchuck High School and part of the school's varsity football team.
"He was training really hard for his next season," Lacic said. "He's great to his family. He's very strong-headed. He goes after what he wants."
Lacic started a donation page at www.helptroutfamily.com to help raise money for his medical care and other needs. A Facebook donation page has also been set up along with a Trout Family Recovery Fund at any Chase Bank branch.
A "dine for donations" benefit from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 11 at Boston's Restaurant, 16918 Twin Lakes Avenue in Marysville*, is also scheduled, Lacic said.
"They're a strong family and probably one of the nicest families you'll ever meet," she said. "There are a lot of us here now to help support them."
