FLORENCE, Ore. — Thousands of grey whales are on the move along the Oregon coast. They’re heading north toward summer feeding grounds in the Bering Sea.
KVAL-TV says people staked out the coast Saturday hoping to catch a glimpse of the massive mammals.
Cheryl Haskell with Whale Watching Spoken Here says the best chance to see a gray whale along the Oregon coast is between now and early May.
Trained volunteers will be stationed at 24 sites along the Oregon coast this week to help visitors spot the whales.
Gray whales migrate south during the winter to give birth to their young in the warm, calm bays of Mexico. They return north and spend the summer feeding in the Bering and Chukchi Seas.
