MARYSVILLE -- The cold and the rain couldn't stop Dani Weir.
The Snohomish golfer -- the medalist with a modified Stableford score of 28 -- helped lead her team to victory in the first Wesco North match of the season that was played in constant rain and cool temperatures at Battle Creek Golf Course.
"We played in rain the entire match," said Larry Palmer, the head coach of the Lake Stevens girls team, who were designated as the home team for the match. "It was cold and dismal."
Thanks to Weir and Bailey Wells (23), Snohomish took first place overall with 101 points, 27 ahead of second-place Lake Stevens (74). Arlington (60) rounded out the top three, followed by Stanwood (51), Marysville Pilchuck (41) and Monroe (22).
The Vikings were able to finish second thanks to four golfers who finished in sequential order, starting with Julia Elton at 18.
"We're very steady and consistent," Palmer said.
The second best score of the day, behind Weir, went to MP's Ashley Tande, who shot a 25.
"I think the game affected some of the kids' scores but there were a couple kids, Ashley Tande and Dani Weir, those are outstanding scores given the playing conditions," Palmer said. "... Those girls are expected to do well this year."
Lauren Grogan (Arlington) and Jade Borseth (Stanwood) led their respective teams with 22 points apiece.
Palmer said the season is still early, but Snohomish "is definitely favored to be the top team in the Wesco North this year." He noted that anything can happen on the links, and made just one wish for the rest of the season.
"Golf's an up and down deal," Palmer said. "Let's just hope for better weather."
