GRANITE FALLS -- Two suspected burglars were arrested Tuesday after one of them reportedly threatened to stab a grandmother during a break-in.
A Granite Falls woman woke up about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday to find a man in her bedroom with a knife, according to a police affidavit.
The man demanded gold and jewelry from the woman and threatened to stab her, she told police. He also told her he had a gun and that he had tied up her 13-year-old granddaughter, who was sleeping on the couch in the living room.
The man started rifling through the bedroom, and the woman ran into the living room and yelled to her granddaughter, who was still sleeping, to call 911.
The man then ran out of the house with about $20 in cash and nine silver dollars, the woman told police. She saw him run across a back field toward Highway 92.
A police dog led investigators to a camper parked outside an abandoned house along the highway, court records show. The camper's lock was broken, and there were six people inside.
One of the men inside had fresh scratches on his face, and leaves and dirt on his shirt, police wrote in court papers. That man and another man in the camper both looked as if they had been "recently exercising."
Granite Falls Police Chief Dennis Taylor estimated that the camper was about 300 yards from the victim's home. The suspects had to jump a creek, climb a hill and cross the highway, he said.
Other people who were in the camper told police the two suspects had left earlier in the night but had recently ran back inside, closed the door, turned off the lights and told everyone to be quiet.
The two men were arrested and booked into Snohomish County Jail for investigation of burglary, assault and theft. One is 30, of Federal Way; the other, 22, from Snohomish.
The investigation is ongoing, Taylor said Wednesday.
Police served a search warrant on the camper on Tuesday night. They recovered items believed to be stolen from the woman's home, the chief said.
There have been no recent, similar reports of a burglary escalating into threats of violence in Granite Falls, he said.
