Readers show photography skills online and in print
A black-tail doe jumps a fence near Winthrop in this photo by Jim Stiles. The doe was part of a group of about ten deer that were grazing near the edge of the road right on the outskirts of Winthrop. "The combination of bright snow, and nearly clear skies provided ample light to get a fast shutter speed enabling me to get her frozen in mid-leap. She rejoined her little herd and continued grazing in the field," Stiles said of the scene.

Last September we launched Your Photos on HeraldNet, a place where readers can upload their own photos to share with the community. We started off encouraging readers to send photos from Friday night high school football games, and from there it's grown. Readers have shared a variety such as cute pet portraits and a news photo of a boat fire. To make these photos, readers use devices as simple as camera phones and as sophisticated as Canon SLRs -- the same equipment pros use.
We now run a selection of these submitted photos every Monday in the printed pages of The Herald's local news section.
A common thread in reader galleries is that our local photographers love color. Maybe it is because we have so many gray days, but the most popular galleries are those filled with nature, animals and sunsets.
Jim Stiles, a regular contributor to Your Photos, not only contributes nature and animal photography to HeraldNet, but he also has been featured in The Herald and on the cover of the Woodland Park Zoo 2012 calendar.
"I greatly enjoy sharing the beauty I capture with a wide array of online communities. More than anything, I enjoy helping other photographers learn how to better their skills and capture more skilled images," Stiles said.
Local photographer Jenni El Fattal is another frequent contributor to Your Photos.
"I love sharing my work with others," El Fattal said of The Herald's online reader gallery. "I have gotten emails requesting to purchase my work, and people who want to tell me what they liked about my pictures. I just like to make people happy, and it's been wonderful to have such positive feedback and be inspired by other creative photographers in The Herald community."
