Greetings from Mariners Opening Day, Part 3

So the Mariners have played their opener in Japan, then been a part of the A's home opening day festivities in Oakland, and now, finally, they're playing their home opener at Safeco Field. It's been a strange journey to get to this point for Seattle, which has traveled over 15,000 miles flying from Arizona to Japan to Arizona to Oakland to Texas to Seattle.

We're a little over an hour away from first pitch, but there are a few news items to pass along first.

For starters former M's centerfielder, Mike Cameron, who is throwing out the first pitch today, announced in a press conference that he is officially retiring from baseball as a Mariner having signed a one-day contract. That obviously is only a ceremonial contract, but a pretty cool deal for a player who was a big part of two Mariners playoff teams. Cameron came here with the unenviable task of taking over for Ken Griffey Jr. but his play in the field and his personality quickly won fans over.

The Mariners made a roster move today, recalling left-hander Charlie Furbush from Tacoma. Fellow lefty George Sherrill was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow strain.

And speaking of injuries, outfielder Mike Carp, who suffered a shoulder injury in Japan, is starting a rehab assignment with Tacoma. Eric Wedge didn't put a timetable on when Carp will be ready to join the big league club.
