The Pentagon said Army Spc. Philip C. S. Schiller, 21, died Wednesday in Kandahar province of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.
Malloy said Monday that while Schiller more recently lived in The Colony, Texas, a suburb north of Dallas, "we remember him as our own." His father lives in Connecticut.
Malloy said flags will be lowered in Connecticut on the day of Schiller's burial, which hasn't been announced.
The military said Schiller joined the Army in 2010 and was on his first deployment. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
