Boeing supplier Spirit to resume production Monday

Spirit AeroSystems will restart production of Boeing Co. aircraft parts on Monday, more than a week after the company's Kansas site was damaged by tornadoes.

“We are committed to doing what we have to do to bring our factory up and running by Monday,” Jeff Turner, Spirit CEO, said in a statement Wednesday.

A storm damaged several buildings at Spirit's Wichita location Saturday night. Spirit, which is a key supplier on all Boeing jets, initially had hoped to bring employees back onsite today. However, the company has suspended operations for the rest of the week. Spirit employees have been told to stay home unless called in by a manager.

Once production resumes, Spirit said it will work to quickly ramp the pace back up to full-rate.

Boeing said Wednesday that it is still assessing the situation at Spirit.

“Our focus right now is to understand the effect of the event on Spirit's production capabilities. We'll balance that information against our inventory of parts and determine whether further contingencies are needed to minimize any potential impact to production,” Boeing spokeswoman Mary Kelly wrote in an email.

Boeing expects to have a plan in place over the next several days.

On Wednesday, Spirit said it will pay employees for their normal work schedule this week.
