Murphy's Gordon headed to Cal Poly

Battling back from a serious knee injury was all worth it for Archbishop Murphy boys basketball player Zach Gordon.

The senior post, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee last year, is set to sign his national letter of intent on Wednesday to play at Cal Poly next season.

"I'm just relieved the process is over and I'm excited to be a Mustang," Gordon said last week shortly after announcing on Twitter he had made verbal commitment to the central California school.

After his knee injury, Gordon was told by some that he would miss the winter basketball season entirely. But the 6-foot-8 forward hit the gym hard and dedicated himself to making it back for opening day. He did and he averaged 13.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game this past season for the Wildcats.

"Zach (Gordon) has the athletic ability and energy to help us immediately next season," said Cal Poly head coach Joe Callero. "His academic profile and work ethic are a perfect fit and will compliment our other three fall signings. He can play the four or five spot and is highly competitive. Zach is a real sleeper and a steal."
