ARLINGTON -- Free airplane rides for kids are among the activities Saturday at the annual Arlington Airport Appreciation Day.
The event is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. near the airport office, 18204 59th Drive NE.
Arlington Mayor Barbara Tolbert, whose day job is the director of the Arlington Fly-In, said Appreciation Day is set aside for the community to enjoy its municipal airport.
"Every other day of the year, the Arlington Airport is a center of economic activity and a hub for advanced manufacturing," Tolbert said. "I hope people come out to see what a wonderful city asset we have."
Free airplane rides for children and teens ages 8 to 17 are scheduled to be provided by local pilots through the EAA Young Eagles Program. Parent or guardian permission is required.
Arlington-based Biringer Farms plans to provide tractor rides, including stopping at Arlington Flight Services where the Flying Gizmos show helps participants learn about the science and history of flight through the use of flying toys and models.
Additional activities include tours of Airlift Northwest's helicopter and Snohomish County's Search and Rescue helicopter. The Historic Flight Foundation & North Cascades Vintage Aero Museum plans to fly in a combination of vintage aircraft and warbirds for viewing. Arlington Fire and Police departments plan to be on hand for vehicles tours, as well. The state Department of Transportation Aviation Division is set to host a booth where people can paint an airplane model. Other kids activities include face painting, chalk art on the runway, flight simulators and games.
Airplane rides for any age will be offered for a fee by owners of vintage and modern aircraft at the airport. The restaurant NASA -- named for the former Naval Air Station Arlington -- has specials for children.
