Reports surfaced today that Seth Jones has signed with the Portland Winterhawks.
Jones, the mega-prospect defenseman, was selected by Everett in the first round of the 2009 bantam draft. He spent the previous two seasons playing for the U.S. NTDP, then was to choose between the WHL and the NCAA. Jones decided he would not play for Everett, so two weeks ago the Tips allowed the Winterhawks to talk with Jones in exchange for a conditional bantam draft pick.
According to the Portland Tribune, Portland’s talks paid off. The story says Jones signed Saturday and it will be announced Tuesday. Jones is even quoted in the story, so I think it’s safe to say this is legit.
The original deal between Everett and Portland was just for the right to talk to Jones. Another deal will need to be made to transfer Jones’ rights. The story quotes Portland coach/GM Mike Johnston saying a deal was essentially already in place should Jones sign.
So by tomorrow we should find out if Everett got anything out of this.
