The Everett Farmers Market is under new ownership and management. Karen Erickson and Gary Purves have taken over from longtime owners Inger and Tone Hutton.
This season, the market starts June 3 and will be open every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Oct. 7.
The market started in 1994, and it’s grown from a few vendors to more than 75 and moved to a prime position on the waterfront, off West Marine View Drive. The Huttons had bought the market in 2002, leased the land from the Port of Everett and charged vendors a flat fee to sell their wares.
Last year, I talked with the Huttons about the potential challenge of a competing indoor, year-round farmers market on Grand Avenue, to be run by a nonprofit group of area farmers. At the time, they told me it could be mutually beneficial, with customers patronizing both locations. Inger Hutton also said there are a growing number of markets competing for a limited number of farmers.
The indoor farmers market was originally slated to be open as early as this spring. But construction hasn’t started.
