More Boeing pilots join SPEEA
Boeing Co. pilots and instructors in the company's flight training services group have voted to join the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, the union said Thursday.
The new union members join SPEEA's Airplane Manufacturing Pilots Association bargaining unit, bringing the total number of pilots and instructors represented to 105.
About 81 percent of pilots and instructors who voted did so in favor of joining SPEEA. The new members are primarily based in Renton. They are responsible for all technical, safety and flight standards, along with instructing in simulators. Their work includes training pilots of airline customers on Boeing aircraft, including the 787.
“We didn't have to do this, but we needed to have a stronger voice,” Mike Coker, safety pilot and member of the organizing committee, said in a statement. “Our group has a lot of experience and we want to use it to ensure Boeing has the best training and support possible.”
SPEEA represents more than 22,000 Boeing engineers and technical workers in the Puget Sound region.
