Prep track: Cedarcrest boys, King's girls take home titles
King's continued to dominate the girls meet, finishing with 209.5 and beating the closest challenger, Archbishop Murphy by a margin of 98.5 points.
Cedarcrest's boys victory was the school's first league championship, breaking a 17-year winning streak for King's, according to Cedarcest head coach Bruce McDowell, who also said the Knights girls' win is the school's 18th consecutive victory.
The Red Wolves' big boys win came with the help of strong performances from Mitchell Montgomery and Zach Jordan. Montgomery won the 800- and 3,200-meter races and ran on the winning 1,600 relay team. Jordan won both hurdles events.
McDowell said a boys win was initially unexpected, but as the event approached and he looked at the breakdown of the races he started to see possibilities.
"In cross country, you only need five or six kids to run well (to win). We needed 25 boys to do exactly what they needed to do," McDowell said. "That's not something you can necessarily count on."
They did it, and the Red Wolves took home the title of conference champs.
For the girls, Karlie Storkson of King's dominated with wins in the 100, 200 and 400 meters, as well as running on the winning 800 relay team. Daphne Kieling won both hurdles events for the Knights and also ran on the winning 800 relay team. Rachel Cundy of Lakewood turned in two strong distance wins in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.
"King's was its usual dominating self," said McDowell. "They've got good girls in every event. Their number one girl is probably in the top three in every event. When you have that kind of ability in every event as well as depth in some of them ... they are a pretty big power."
Next up the 1A schools have a tri-district meet next week at King's H.S. and the 2A schools head to a district meet next week at Cedarcrest H.S.
