Seahawks QB Russell Wilson to compete for starting job

As we mentioned earlier in the weekend, rookie quarterback Russel Wilson got off to a good start in his first minicamp with the Seahawks. Well as it turns out, the third-round pick was so impressive over the past three days that Pete Carroll has decided that the competition for the starting quarterback job needs to include more people than just Tarvaris Jackson and Matt Flynn.

“Here’s what I’m going to say about it: he’s going to be in the competition," Carroll told reporters after the final day of Seattle's first rookie minicamp. "He showed us enough. He’s in the competition. That is going to tax us, as we know, and it was already going to be taxing with two. But he’s showed us enough that we need to see where he fits in with these guys."

The Seahawks signed Flynn, the top quarterback in free agency not named Peyton Manning, but immediately declared that he would have to earn the starting job by beating out Jackson. Then last month Seattle added Wilson in the draft to shake things up even more at the position, and Wilson came in and wowed his new coaches this weekend. Just how that competition will play out remains to be seen, and Carroll didn't put a timeline on when a decision might come.

"We’ll just have to see how he fits as the time goes on," Carroll said. "It’s going to take us a long time to do this. It’s going to be frustrating for you guys. You’re going to keep asking and wanting to know and I’m just going to be more patient than you can imagine as we go through this process and we’ll just figure it out when we do.”

Asked if they thought Wilson would come in and compete for the starting job this quickly when they picked him, Carroll answered: “I had hoped that. I had hoped that and we confirmed it in these three days. He left really no question that he needs to be involved in the competition of this thing.”
