    Arlington in Snohomish County, Wash.

This is one of a series of looks at Snohomish and Island county communities based on data from the U.S. Census of 2010. Historically a timber and railroad town, Arlington is situated 10 miles north of Everett. Incorporated in 1903, it lies at the forks of the Stillaguamish River. The native Salish people camped at the forks as they followed abundant salmon. The current city was originally two towns, one of which was Haller City. Major landmarks include the Arlington Municipal Airport and the historic downtown North Olympic Avenue. Arlington encompasses the northeast part of Smokey Point, a bustling commercial area straddling Arlington, Marysville and I-5. A series of annexations caused Arlington's population to jump 53 percent from 2000 to 2010. About a third of residents live in the Gleneagle development, built primarily from 1987 to 2002.
