2 volunteer firefighters accused of misusing money

WARM BEACH -- Two volunteer firefighters are expected to resign after reportedly spending thousands of labor group dollars in inappropriate ways.
The money belonged to the North County Volunteer Firefighter Association, an organization funded primarily by member dues, not tax dollars.
The two people were volunteering for the North County Regional Fire Authority when they spent about $4,700 of volunteer association money on items such as restaurant meals and gas, Fire Chief Dale Fulfs said Wednesday.
The former volunteers also didn't keep proper receipts or other documentation of purchases, Fulfs said.
The spending was discovered during an internal audit, Fulfs said. North County fire officials shared their findings with Snohomish County sheriff's investigators, who recommended they resolve the matter on their own.
As of Wednesday, one of the volunteers had submitted a letter of resignation, and the other was expected to submit one soon, Fulfs said. The volunteers this week were drafting an agreement with the association to pay back some or all of the money.
No other individuals or professional firefighters were believed to be involved.
The Herald is not naming the former volunteers because they have not been accused of a crime.
Volunteer association leadership declined to discuss the matter.
