Not long after filing, Gigi Burke dropped out of the race to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Everett City Councilman Drew Nielsen.
A new candidate, Jon Ott, has filed. He is retired from the Everett police department.
As of Friday morning, the other two candidates filed are Pete Kinch, a former mayor from 1990 to 1994, and Scott Bader, the candidate who ran unsuccessfully for Councilwoman Brenda Stonecipher’s seat last fall. He’s employed by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle.
Many in the community are still dealing with the loss of Nielsen. The process to fill his seat is moving so quickly because the Everett charter dictates an election must take place this year. The auditor wanted to lump the filing for that seat in with other races. The charter also calls for the City Council to name someone to serve in the interim.
The deadline for filing is Friday at 5 p.m.
