Everett church is new home for alcohol-free dance club

EVERETT -- It's been almost two years since Coyle Jefferson set out to create an alcohol-free dance club in Snohomish County. Saturday night,the 449 Club he envisioned will hold its first dance at a new home, Everett's Zion Lutheran Church.
"We feel the 449 Club presents an opportunity and provides entertainment for anyone who wants to enjoy good dance music, a friendly atmosphere and some good old-school R&B music of today and yesterday, without the alcohol," Jefferson said this week.
Jefferson said the dance club has entered into a facility-user agreement with Zion Lutheran to lease space in the lower level of the church, located at 4634 Alger Ave., Everett.
The club will hold dances from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. every Saturday at Zion Lutheran, Jefferson said. In the future, some dances may be held on Fridays and weekdays. Tickets are $7 in advance, or $10 at the door. The club is supported by memberships, T-shirt sales, donations and other fundraising.
Refreshments will be available at dances. Jefferson said volunteers will be helping with the dances, and that more helpers are welcome.
Jefferson's hope to open an alcohol-free dance club was featured in a Herald column in 2010. At the time, the Lake Stevens area man talked about his journey away from alcohol use with the help of a 12-step program. He recalled his first day of sobriety -- May 16, 1988 -- and said his idea for an alcohol-free dance club came from a similar club in Seattle.
In 2011, the 449 Club found a temporary home at Everett's Normanna Hall, but the dances have been on hold for months, Jefferson said.
Saturday dance will feature music played by a disc jockey, but Jefferson said live bands are expected to play at future events.
