SEDRO-WOOLLEY -- Meadowdale was determined not to let history repeat itself.
The Mavericks softball team had held a lead against Sedro-Woolley in the seventh inning before, only to see it disappear in a 7-6 loss to the Cubs in both teams' opening game of the 3A District 1 tournament. Saturday afternoon they got a little revenge.
Led by back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the first inning by Hailey Costello and Ashley Brooke, Meadowdale built an early lead and this time held on to it, defeating Sedro-Woolley 7-3 in a winner-to-state game Saturday afternoon.
"It feels great," said Meadowdale head coach Dennis Hopkins. "It's great to get revenge for the loss on Tuesday."
Alyssa Reuble picked up the win for Meadowdale, scattering six hits among the dangerous Cubs' lineup. The win was finalized -- and punctuated -- by freshman Rebecca Wright, who made a diving catch in left field on the last play of the game.
"I was thinking, 'I had to do something,'" Wright said. "I didn't know (if I caught the ball). I was just hoping I was going to get it."
After losing its first game in the district tournament, the Mavericks won their next four games and clinched the district's second berth in next weekend's 3A state tournament at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.
"We just knew what we had to do," Hopkins said. "We were handed lemons, so we made lemonade. It just got sweeter each game."
