Glacier Peak High School drama teacher Patti Wade used the word “spectacle” to describe the Snohomish school’s production of the musical “Seussical.”
“I felt we had a very strong production, full of spectacle as well as an exceptionally talented cast and crew,” Wade said.
Those are among the reasons “Seussical” earned a nomination in the highest honors category of outstanding overall musical production in this year’s 5th Avenue High School Musical Theater Awards.
This is the 10th year for the awards and Glacier Peak is competing for the top honor along with seven other high schools throughout Washington.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony June 4 at the 5th Avenue theater in a celebration that mimics the pomp and thrill of the Tony Awards.
Wade spreads the credit for the school earning the nomination in a wide circle.
“Our strength was in an inspiring group of kids, parents, teachers, and vocal, acting, dancing, orchestra directors, as well as other employees of the district, who collaborated or helped in some way,” Wade said. “Certainly there were some bumps in the Whoville road to Seuss, but ultimately the collaboration and communication is what contributed to the production’s success.”
Glacier Peak’s “Seussical” also was nominated in the categories of outstanding direction, choreography, scenic, lighting, costume and hair, and makeup design, stage crew, performance by an actress and actor in a leading role, and outstanding performance by a chorus.
“I am ecstatic that our show has been recognized with so many nominations,” said director Darren Oke. “We are a bit shocked and extremely excited about this, but I couldn’t be prouder of my talented and enthusiastic cast, crew and volunteers.”
Other Snohomish County high schools nominated for awards are: Edmonds Heights K12’s production of “Allegro,” and Stanwood High School’s “Grease” for outstanding music direction; Marysville-Pilchuck High School’s “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” and Sultan High School’s “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” for outstanding scenic design; Lake Stevens High School’s “Chicago” for outstanding performance by an actress in a leading role; and Mountlake Terrace High School’s “Pump Boys and Dinettes” for outstanding performance by an ensemble cast.
