No child should ever live in fear

I would like to comment on the May 15 letter, "Children today are too coddled": There was no need for the letter writer's dad to smack him in the mouth. Being taken aside and reminding in a nice way to call the father's friend Mr. So and So, instead of by his first name, would have been sufficient.
No child should ever, ever live in fear of being smacked in the mouth, threatened with a wooden spoon or other abuse.
Bad parenting is often passed down through the generations.
