SELAH -- It's been quite a run for the seniors on the Granite Falls softball team, making the way it ended Friday night all the more difficult.
After coming from behind to win the first game of the day, the Tigers were defeated by Tumwater 9-1 in the quarterfinals and a late rally came up short in a 4-3 loss to Sequim in the consolation bracket, ending their season.
"It's a tough time for the seniors," said Granite Falls coach Candi Reeves. "They had a great run and I'm so proud of them."
Granite Falls, which scored nine runs in the final two innings to beat White River in the first round, ran into a buzzsaw in the quarterfinals. Powered by two home runs and a strong pitching performance, Tumwater beat Granite Falls 9-1.
In the consolation bracket, Granite Falls fell behind early, but scored a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to draw to within a run at 4-3. But with the bases loaded and two outs, a Tigers batter struck out to end the game and the season.
In the early game, trailing 4-1 Granite Falls made a pitching change that changed everything.
Lauren Harding relieved starter Kimmy Martinez in the fifth inning and held White River scoreless in the final three innings as the Tigers' offense woke up en route to a 10-4 win in a first-round game of the 2A state tournament.
After Harding got Granite Falls out of a jam in the fifth, the Tigers scored four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to win the game. The Tigers advanced to play Tumwater in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m.
Peyton Spencer was 3-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run double, and Haley Brennan was 2-for-4 with three RBI in the win.
