Everett: Vigil for girl slain in Arizona
Snohomish County leaders, including the county’s Human Rights Commission, have planned a tribute this afternoon for a 9-year-old Arizona girl who was killed three years ago by border activists with ties to Everett.
The community vigil for Brisenia Flores is scheduled at Snohomish County’s flag pavilion, at 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett, at 4:30 p.m.
Brisenia was shot to death, along with her father, 29-year-old Raul Flores, on May 30, 2009. Brisenia’s mother, Gina Gonzalez, also was shot but survived after a gun battle with the attackers.
Shawna Forde, formerly of Everett, and Jason Bush, also from Washington state, were convicted in the case and are on Arizona’s death row. An Arizona man, Albert Gaxiola, received a life sentence. Testimony at their trials revealed Forde led the attack on Brisenia’s family as part of a plan to fund her Minutemen American Defense group through robbery. Forde founded the organization in Everett and left here in early 2009 after a series of violent incidents.
Following the vigil, a reception and short workshop are planned.

Marysville: Calling all artists
Artists from Snohomish County are invited to a Gathering of Artists potluck dinner on June 6 hosted by Greater Marysville Artists Guild. The dinner is set for 6 p.m. and is an opportunity to meet other artists. A sale of artist supplies and books is also planned during the event at Jennings Park, 6915 Armar Road.

Oak Harbor: Sex crimes prevention
The Island County Sheriff’s Office and the Oak Harbor Youth Commission plan a community forum on keeping kids safe from sexual predators. The forum is set for 6 p.m. Thursday at North Whidbey Middle School, 67 Northeast Izett St., Oak Harbor. “This forum is aimed at educating parents and other adults about keeping children safe from sexual predators,” Sheriff Mark Brown said.
A panel discussion will include sex crimes detectives, domestic-violence and sexual-assault experts, and a state corrections official who investigates convicted sex offenders, Brown said.
Stanwood: Sale benefits 5th-graders
Stanwood Elementary School plans to host a garage sale to help families with needs and raise money for the PTA’s fifth-grade camp fund. Donations for the sale are to be accepted from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. The sale is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the school gym, 10227 273rd Place NW.

Tulalip: Author to discuss treaties
Alexandra Sasha Harmon, a professor of American Indian Studies at the University of Washington, is scheduled to discuss Indian treaties in a talk from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Hibulb Cultural Center and Museum, 6410 23rd Ave. NE, Tulalip. Harmon is the author of “Indians in the Making: Ethnic Relations and Indian Identities Around Puget Sound” and “Rich Indians: Native People and the Problem of Wealth in American History.”
The cost is the price of admission to the museum, which for adults is $10.
