NEWPORT, Ore. — A large derelict dock washed ashore this week on Agate Beach near Newport, leaving some wondering if it was torn away from Japan by the March 2011 tsunami.
The dock is a concrete and metal pontoon that measures 66 feet long, 7 feet high and 19 feet wide.
A spokesman for the Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation, Chris Havel, told The Oregonian there’s no obvious evidence it crossed the ocean from Japan. But it will have to be removed from the beach. If it can’t be refloated, it may have to be dismantled.
