'Just Imagine' fun at Strawberry Fest
This year's 81st Strawberry Festival is themed "Just Imagine," and there are plenty of family activities scheduled to spur the creative.
"We want to attract as many families as possible with children," festival spokeswoman Carol Kapua said.
Events begin Saturday with the Berry Run, a mile-long walk or run and a 5K at the Plant Farm. The 2012 Kids Party in the Park will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Asbery Field. There will be lots of activities, including face painting and vendor booths. Most activities are free.
The Strawberry Festival continues with a fashion show from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Leifer Manor, 12511 State Ave. Tickets are $20.
An all-ages talent show starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Marysville Pilchuck High School Auditorium, 5611 108th St. N.E. Tickets are $4 in advance, $5 at the door.
Activities fill the weekend of June 15 to 18 including a Trike Race, lots of entertainment, the Market at Asbery Field, a strawberry-eating contest, and the Kiddy Parade and the Grand Parade on June 16. Fireworks are scheduled for 10 p.m. June 16 at the Public Works facility.
For the first time, there also will be beer. The Kiwanis Beer Garden will serve throughout the weekend on Seventh Street.
And, of course, what would the Strawberry Festival be without strawberry shortcake? The Masonic Lodge will sell the dessert throughout the weekend, Kapua said.
She's not concerned about the weather.
"We don't mention the 'r' word," she said, laughing. "I'm sure it's going to be all out of its system before then."
