GOLD BAR -- The Snohomish County Council on Monday appointed Elizabeth LaZella to fill a vacant position on the Gold Bar City Council.

The 4-0 decision to choose LaZella followed an interview at the County Council chambers, which Gold Bar Mayor Joe Beavers attended.

LaZella, a retired respiratory therapist, was the only applicant who expressed interest in filling the vacancy left by former City Councilman Charles Lie. He resigned in January. LaZella's term on the five-member City Council expires in 2013.

LaZella has since 1994 lived in Gold Bar, a town on the U.S. 2 corridor with about 2,000 inhabitants.

The city tried unsuccessfully early this year to fill the vacancy and in April asked the county for help finding willing candidates.
