Five area baseball players sign pro contracts

Five local players selected in last week's Major League Baseball draft have signed professional contracts.

The five include:

Right-handed pitcher Chris Johnson from Edmonds. Johnson pitched this spring at the University of Portland. He was a 17th-round choice of the San Francisco Giants.

Catcher-outfielder Chase Anselment of Edmonds. Anselment played at the University of Washington this spring. He signed with the Atlanta Braves as a 17th-round choice.

Right-handed pitcher Owen Jones from Edmonds. Jones, the closer for the University of Portland baseball team, was a 19th-round selection of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He joins his brother Austin, a seventh-round pick by the Yankees last year, in pro ball.

Right-handed pitcher Aaron Brooks from Edmonds Community College. Brooks, drafted in the 26th round, signed with the Seattle Mariners. Brooks is a Mountlake Terrace High School graduate.

Shortstop Taylor Smith-Brennan from Edmonds Community College. Smith-Brennan signed with the Milwaukee Brewers, who picked him in the 37th round. Smith -Brennan is a Meadowdale High School graduate.
