1 arrested, 1 hurt after alleged shoplifting

EDMONDS -- A car crash in Edmonds on Thursday night was caused by a trio who were trying to run from police after shoplifting groceries, Edmonds police Sgt. Mike Blackburn said.
The commotion started just after 8 p.m., when police were summoned to a reported shoplifting incident at Top Food and Drug along Highway 99, Blackburn said. A man allegedly had run from the store with two baskets loaded with groceries.
"The suspect was seen jumping into the passenger side of a waiting red Ford Econoline van before it sped away southbound," Blackburn said.
Police attempted to pull over the van nearby, but it accelerated, ran a red light and crashed into another car, Blackburn said. At that point, the van's driver ran away.
A Redmond woman, 41, who had been riding in the van was seriously injured. She was taken to a Seattle hospital. No one else was seriously hurt.
The suspected shoplifter, 41, of Everett, was arrested at the scene.
Police still are looking for the van's driver. He's described as 30, white, and 5-foot-11, 200 pounds. He had short light brown hair and may have been balding.
