MONROE -- A Monroe-area woman was critically injured Tuesday afternoon while cutting a tree with a chain saw.

The accident was reported just after 2:50 p.m. at a home along 174th Street SE, south of Ben Howard Road between Monroe and Sultan, Monroe assistant fire chief Steve Guptill said.

The woman, who appeared to be in her 40s, was cutting the tree when a piece of it came loose and knocked her off a ladder, Guptill said.

She fell about 15 feet. She was taken to a local hospital.
