EVERETT — People who live or work near Silver Lake should get ready for construction work beginning later this summer.
The city plans to start widening a segment of 112th Street SE from the Bothell-Everett Highway to Silver Lake Road in mid-August.
Construction should take about a year, said Ryan Sass, Everett city engineer. At least some of the lanes should remain open during construction.
“Most people will encounter delays,” Sass said. “We do our best to provide access to businesses.”
The corridor is part of an important east-west commuter route that connects the Bothell-Everett Highway to Paine Field.
This stretch of road is the last part of the corridor to be improved. Now, the road has two lanes heading east, a center turn lane and a single lane headed west.
This project will add a fifth lane.
On weekdays, between 12,000 and 20,000 cars and trucks use the entire corridor. This segment sees volumes toward the higher end of that range, Sass said.
To put that in context, that amount of traffic is less than busy streets such as Broadway, Evergreen Way or Everett Mall Way, but more than most other major arterials within Everett, he said.
The city had to secure 22 different parcels of land to expand the road. The city paid out more than $750,000 for the right-of-way acquisitions.
The entire project budget is $4.39 million. The city plans to pay for $1.26 million. The rest will be paid for with state money, including $2.6 million from the Transportation Improvement Board.
