Yakama Nation wants some jurisdiction over members

TOPPENISH -- The Yakama Nation is ready to present a plan on how they intend to implement a measure that will return some criminal and civil authority to the tribe over its people.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reported that the plan includes truancy, welfare, mental health and juvenile delinquency.
Yakima County officials requested the meeting with the tribe after state lawmakers in March approved a measure creating a roadmap for retrocession -- something that was made possible after a federal law passed years ago allowing tribes to reclaim some jurisdiction that had been bestowed on states.
Under retrocession, tribes must show that they have the resources to take back authority over areas they request and successfully petition the governor's office.
The U.S. Department of Interior has final say.
