The Monroe Historical Society is commemorating the history of stock car racing in Monroe with a salute to the Sky Valley Speedway, Monroe's original dirt racetrack, and the local visionaries who carved it out of a hillside back in 1957.

The free commemorative event is Saturday at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in 4-H building 501.

The building will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. to view displays and meet old friends.

A presentation of the history of racing will begin at 4 p.m. followed by an open-mic session for early racers, mechanics, trophy girls and anyone else to share memories of the track and racing in Monroe.

Tables will be available for displaying photos, trophies, scrapbooks and other memorabilia.

Old cars from the era are expected to be on display.

Everyone is welcome.

For more information, call 360-217-7223.

On Tuesday, the tests will be offered from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
