The 35-year-old Rome, a 2004 U.S. Olympian, threw the discus 202 feet, 10 inches during Monday qualifying. It came on the third of his three throws.
Qualifying first was Lance Brooks of Denver, who threw 212-7. He was followed by Russ Winger of Colorado Springs, Colo., at 205-5.
The top 12 qualifiers advance to Thursday's final, when they will bid for three spots on the U.S. Olympic team for this summer's Games in London
