EDMONDS -- The Carol Rowe Memorial Food Bank director and volunteers are hurt and upset after someone stole about $100 in cash last week.
Food bank director Peggy Kennedy came to work the morning of June 19 and noticed that the padlock on a metal filing cabinet in her office wasn't secured.
"I hope they needed it desperately, because, you know, they not only stole from a church but a food bank," Kennedy said. "I hope they really needed that money."
No food was taken.
The organization, known as the Edmonds Food Bank, is housed in the basement of the Edmonds United Methodist Church.
Police found no signs of forced entry, Edmonds police Sgt. Mike Blackburn said. He said there are several sets of keys to the part of the building where the food bank is located.
Police have no suspects.
The food bank serves about 1,200 people in 300 families. It's set up like a store, with customers coming on Tuesdays and selecting groceries.
The work done by Kennedy and the volunteers is well-known in the community.
The stolen cash would have covered gas for the trucks that pick up food donations, the director said.
She wasn't despairing, however.
"The community is so supportive of us. We are really blessed," Kennedy said.
