1. Minnesota Lynx (13-1), After the Lynx hiccup in Seattle, they have gotten back on track nicely, winning three straight. The WNBA record for wins in a season still seems to be very much in danger.
2. Los Angeles Sparks (10-5), The Sparks have been inconsistent lately, but Candace Parker is hands down the league’s MVP at this point of the season. Securing the No. 2 seed in the West will be very important for the Sparks to give them homecourt advantage in the first round.
3. Indiana Fever (8-5), The Fever are on a bit of a roll of late and Tamika Catchings continues to dominate in nearly every statistical category. Catchings might not always score the most points, but you would be hardpressed to find a player who does more for her team.
4. Connecticut Sun (9-3), The Sun’s record is very impressive, but being blown out by over 30 points by Indiana and a couple of other bad losses leave you never knowing what to expect.
5. Chicago Sky (7-4), Playing without Epiphanny Prince has been a challenge for the Sky, but they have managed to tread water. At full strength this looks like a team that could come out of the East.
6. Seattle Storm (6-7), The Storm have won five straight and look like they have finally figured it all out. The rest of the league certainly doesn’t want to see the Storm get things rolling before they get Lauren Jackson back. With LJ back in the lineup this team could contend for another championship.
7. San Antonio Silver Stars (5-5), The Silver Stars scored a very impressive win over the Los Angeles Sparks, but they can’t seem to break into the league’s elite. Like the Sun, this is another teams that sometimes leaves me scratching my head with all the talent they have.
8. Atlanta Dream (6-7), Angel McCoughtry’s return from injury means that the season will not be lost for the Dream.
9. New York Liberty (4-9), The Liberty could make a bit of a statement with a win over Seattle on Saturday. The Liberty need as many wins as they can get to stay within shouting distance of the Dream for the final east playoff spot.
10. Phoenix Mercury (3-9), With Diana Taurasi, the Mercury can beat anyone on any given night. Without her, not to mention without Penny Taylor, who was injured before the start of the season, the Mercury are next to irrelevant.
11. Tulsa Shock (2-11), This might be the first time in two seasons of my power rankings that I brought the Shock out of the cellar. Finishing ahead of Washington isn’t much of an accomplishment though.
12. Washington Mystics (2-9), In the Mystics two losses to the Storm this past week they showed some signs of life and some potential to do some great things. But it doesn’t matter much if they aren’t putting “W’s” in the win column.
