Jasmin Thai: A tasty discovery in Stanwood

We found the restaurant by accident. Our original destination was closed. So we took a slow drive through Stanwood, looking for something that sounded delicious on a Tuesday night.

We found Jasmin Thai and Sushi, decided that sounded lovely and wandered on in.

We could smell the delicious aroma of Thai food long before we reached the restaurant. A friendly waitress greeted us and we sat down. The restaurant is small, only a dozen tables or so. On the night we were there, it was about half-full, and it seemed several of the parties were regulars. People wandered in frequently to get to-go orders as well.

We started off with the chicken lettuce wraps ($6.95). The spiced ground chicken was served with a large chunk of lettuce to wrap everything up in.

We hesitated on how hot to ask for. The waitress told us that for the lettuce wraps, a 3 was pretty spicy. We settled on that and the heat was just right. It was full-flavored enough to keep my spice-obsessed husband happy yet not so strong it overpowered the other flavors.

We also shared a lemon drop roll ($9.95). The roll included asparagus, avocado and cucumber topped with raw salmon and fresh lemon slices. The lemon was an unusual but tasty addition. The tartness combined well with the other ingredients in the roll. The fish tasted fresh and the veggies were equally fresh.

The menu includes a nice selection of rolls, as well as some nigiri sushi options. Several other rolls caught my attention. The black dragon roll (cucumber, avocado and crab topped with smoked eel and sauce, $9.95) and the fiesta roll (tempura prawn, cilantro, avocado and onion with lime, $8.95) both sound tasty. They had several other rolls with unusual ingredients such as mango.

For dinner, I ordered the yum woon sen salad ($8.95). Prawns, ground chicken and glass noodles were tossed with lime dressing, onion, celery, cilantro, cucumber, tomatoes and cashews over a bed of lettuce. It tasted like summer, bright, fresh and full of flavor. I really enjoyed the lime dressing with the chicken and prawns. I’d certainly order this again. It would make a great light lunch.

My husband ordered the ginger field with beef. It was fresh ginger, bell pepper, onion, mushroom, celery, baby corn and carrot in a black bean sauce. The meat soaked up the flavor well and everything was pleasantly spicy, as hoped for.

The rice, both brown and white, was a dim spot in an otherwise fine meal. The rice was soft and had clearly been cooked for too long in too much water.

We had no other complaints. The service was fast and exceptionally pleasant. The food was delicious. The atmosphere was cozy and relaxed.

The Stanwood Amtrak station is a short walk from the restaurant. It made me want to jump on a train just so I could grab some food to go and eat it while watching the scenery roll by.

I couldn’t be happier we stumbled on Jasmin Thai.
