Less savings in Lewis-McChord consolidation than expected

TACOMA -- A government report says the military realignment that created a dozen joint bases, including Lewis-McChord, two years ago is saving less money than the Pentagon predicted.
The merger of the Army's Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base is mentioned in a Government Accounting Office report last week on the results of the 2005 Base Closure and Realignment Commission work.
The News Tribune reported that the joint bases were expected to save $2.3 billion over 20 years. Instead, the report says, it will total about $249 million.
A separate project to consolidate medical services for McChord airmen is now expected to save $151 million, about $13 million less than first estimated.
JBLM spokesman Joe Piek said the base still expects long-term savings from efficiencies in support services.
