Student takes gold in national SkillsUSA
Sean Johnson of Lake Stevens won a gold medal at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference held June 23 to 27 in Kansas City, Mo.
Johnson, 19, placed first in the Computer Numerical Control Milling post-secondary category. The award makes him eligible for the WorldSkills Competition set for July 2 to 7, 2013, in Leipzig, Germany.
Johnson is a student at Renton Technical College.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.
Arlington Rotary awards scholarships
The Rotary Club of Arlington recently donated $10,000 in college scholarships to four 2012 high school graduates. Students selected demonstrated excellence in academics and community service. Shawn Berg, Jessica Brooks, Emily Massingale and Aaron Nech were each awarded a $2,500 scholarship at presentations in May.
Berg is a graduate of Arlington High School where he was a varsity wrestler. He plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz., where he hopes to pave the way for other visually-impaired students to pursue degrees in engineering.
Brooks, a Darrington High School graduate, plans to attend college in Wyoming and work with horses.
Massingale served as a student body leader and varsity cheerleader at Darrington High School. She plans to pursue a degree in recreation management at the University of Montana. Her goal is to become a park ranger at Denali National Park in Alaska.
Nech graduated first in his class at Lakewood High School. He plans to study computers and business at the University of Washington. He was involved in Future Business Leaders of America and worked as a freelance web developer while in school.
Monroe district awarded PUD grant
Monroe School District was recently awarded a Planet Power grant by the Snohomish PUD.
The award of $28,018 will provide a demonstration and teaching solar power generating installation at Park Place Middle School along with teaching and classroom materials.
Planet Power grants are provided through contributions of PUD customers. The program supports local small-scale solar demonstration projects on buildings such as schools, libraries, city halls and other community sites where customers can learn about solar power and see the technology in use, to raise awareness of energy use and alternative energy sources.
Construction and installation of the building portions of the project will be done during the summer and fall.
EvCC students art exhibited at Schack
The work of Everett Community College art, photography and graphic design students is on display at the Schack Art Center.
The 2012 Visions Explored show runs through Sept. 4 in the Emerging Young Artists’ Gallery at the Schack, 2921 Hoyt Ave., Everett.
Participating artists include: Ardrienne Blythe-Clark, Rae Cook, Dan Douglas, Tara Duffin, Susan Emery, Mary Erickson, Leah Griffiths, Jami Hofemister, Susie Howell, Pamela Kearsey, Jan Lengenfelder, Rachael Lyons, Chelsie Raeburn, Tom Redner, Daniel Schucher, McDonald Shana, Dana Shaw, Raven Simonds, Pat Smith, Wade Spade, Robin Suh, Hannah Thompson-Garner and Joey Walla.
Pieces were selected for the exhibit by a committee of Everett Community College art faculty members, which included Lloyd Weller and Sandra Lepper.
AAUW honors local high school juniors
The American Association of University Women, Everett branch, recently honored 12 high school junior girls with certificates of excellence for their achievements in math, science and technology.
The students who were recognized included Erika Graf, Carissa Hopper and Rachel Turcott from Cascade High School; Haley Ayers, Rosie Ellison and Ashley Utz from Everett High School; Grace Bae, Madeline Miller and Joy Westland from Henry M. Jackson High School; and Nakia Adamson, Noe Cain and Kimberly Traub from Sequoia High School.
