Timbers fire coach John Spencer

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A person close to the situation tells The Associated Press that the Portland Timbers have fired coach John Spencer.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Spencer's dismissal had not yet been made public. The Timbers scheduled a news conference for Monday afternoon.
The firing was first reported by The Oregonian newspaper.
Spencer has been coach of the Timbers since the team joined Major League Soccer last year. General manager Gavin Wilkinson will take over as head coach for the rest of the season.
The Timbers are 5-8-4 with no wins on the road this season.
