Burglary charge in Tacoma break-in

TACOMA -- The Pierce County prosecutor has charged a 35-year-old man with burglary and assault in a recent Tacoma home invasion in which the homeowner shot and wounded an intruder while dodging a hurled hatchet.
Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said the 62-year-old homeowner surprised two intruders in his residence on June 27 and shot one of them after that man threw a hatchet at the resident. The homeowner was not hurt and the intruders fled.
Jonathan Coggins was arraigned Wednesday. Bail was set at $200,000.
The resident had returned home on June 26 to find appliances missing and copper wiring removed. The next day, he armed himself with a shotgun when he heard two male voices downstairs. Although one of the men identified himself as "Tacoma Police!" the resident soon learned that was not the case.
Tacoma police continue to investigate and additional arrests are expected.
