Police believe the man, 27, held up a gas station June 11 and a smoke shop two days later to feed a heroin habit.
In both cases, clerks said they were confronted by a thin man armed with a handgun and wearing a black bandana, sunglasses and black gloves.
A few days after the second robbery, the suspect was pulled over and cited for driving with a suspended license and possessing drug paraphernalia.
A Marysville police officer spotted a backpack in the man's car and was given permission to search it, court papers said. Inside was a toy silver handgun, a bandana mask and other clothing.
The man told the officer the backpack belonged to a man named Chase. He allowed police to take it as evidence.
On June 25, the suspect was stopped again for driving with a suspended license and was detained for questioning in the robberies.
Police found him in possession of a bottle of urine covered with a hand warmer attached by a rubber band. He told police he had the bottle because he was on his way to take a drug test he knew he would fail, according to court papers. Inside the car, police allegedly found several folded pieces of tin foil with black residue consistent with smoking black tar heroin.
A witness who said she helped supply the suspect with heroin later told police the man told her he had used a toy gun to rob two stores in Marysville, court papers said.
In court Friday, the suspect's mother said the man was at home at the time of both robberies.
