Republican John Koster continues to lead in the 1st Congressional District primary election while the battle among Democrats for the second spot is tightening considerably, according to an internal poll released Monday night by the campaign of Democratic candidate Steve Hobbs.
Koster is leading with 30 percent followed by Democrats Darcy Burner at 13 percent, Hobbs at 12 percent and Suzan DelBene at 11 percent, the Hobbs campaign reported. Laura Ruderman tallied 5 percent with 27 percent of those surveyed saying they were undecided.
Information on Democrat Darshan Rauniyar and independent Larry Ishmael was not disclosed.
Hobbs’ campaign conducted the phone poll of 300 likely primary election voters between June 29 and July 2. It has a margin of error of 5.6 percent.
Typically candidates don’t release their internal polls. But Hobbs almost certainly hopes doing so will recalibrate voters’ perspective of the race as they await the arrival of their ballots later this week.
For Hobbs, the internal poll told him what he hoped to hear – among the five Democrats he’s leading in Snohomish County.
Hobbs’ poll shows Burner’s advantage on he and DelBene has evaporated. Last month, in a KING 5 survey of 456 likely primary voters, Burner received 19 percent followed by Ruderman with 6 percent and DelBene and Hobbs with 4 percent each. Sixteen percent were undecided.
The candidate’s poll also found support for Koster may be ebbing. In that King 5 poll, 46 percent said they would vote for the Republican candidate.
