Trade: Tips acquire winger Luke Gordon

Everett announced a trade this morning, acquiring 1994-born winger Luke Gordon from Calgary in exchange for 1994-born defenseman Darian Henry.

Gordon, who hails from remote Terrace, B.C., measures in at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds. Last season he played for the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL, notching 13 goals and seven assists in 49 games. He was called up for three games with the Hitmen over the past two seasons without scoring.

Henry, Everett's seventh-round pick in the 2009 bantam draft, spent half of last season with the Tips before being reassigned at the trade deadline. The 6-foot-4, 165-pounder from Strathmore, Alberta, was scoreless in 16 games with the Tips before joining the Drumheller Dragons of the AJHL, where he had a goal and two assists in 16 games.

The Tips probably had to make a move with their defensemen as they have a ton of young defensemen vying for roster spots next season. Among their 94s, who will be 18, they have Nick Walters and Lucas Grayson returning, as well as Ben Betker arriving from the Seth Jones trade. And Everett has four signed 95-born d-men -- the returning Austin Adam along with Griffin Foulk, Tye Hand and Cole MacDonald -- plus import draft pick Mirco Muller. So space needed to be (and probably still needs to be) cleared.

In Gordon the Tips get an interesting older prospect. Gordon's stats with Nanaimo next season don't jump off the page. However, two seasons ago Gordon finished third in the BCMML in scoring with 60 points (29 goals, 31 assists) in 40 games as a 16-year-old with the Cariboo Cougars. Everett could be getting a little heavy on 94-born forwards, however. The Tips have returners Kohl Bauml, Trent Lofthouse and Carson Samoridny, drafted Stathis Soumelidis in the import draft, and are still on the trail of Jujhar Khaira. Gordon joins this group.
