DelBene, Burner lead Democrats in 1st District poll

Results of a new poll in the 1st Congressional District race show Darcy Burner and Suzan DelBene are in a virtual tie among Democratic candidates.

Here's my story from today's edition.

Strategies 360 - the Seattle firm founded by political consultant Ron Dotzauer - conducted the poll earlier this week. It offers a snapshot of voter attitudes right before they get their ballots.

The poll has one key question - if the election were held today, who would you vote for?

The results show Republican John Koster continues to lead in the race. This survey of 500 likely voters has him at 36 percent.

Among Democrats, Burner is ahead with 12 percent followed by DelBene with 11 percent. Steve Hobbs follows with 7 percent, Laura Ruderman with 3 percent and Darshan Rauniyar with 1 percent.

The big story may be that the number of undecideds is still high - 26 percent in this poll. Also, half of those who made a choice also said they might change their mind before returning their ballot.

Another tidbit from the data -- which I've attached and will be online at Strategies 360 web site today is most voters don't recognize the names of any of the candidates. Only Koster, DelBene and Burner are known to some degree by more than half the voters, according to the poll.

One final note: the poll was done before Ruderman hit the airwaves with her splash of television ads. I'm sure other polls are coming that will reveal the effect of those commercials.
