ASHFORD — A 40-year-old Eatonville man who was killed in a car crash July 29 near La Grande was an employee of Mount Rainier National Park.
The Park Service said Douglas S. Chappell worked on the road crew plowing the road to Paradise. The Park Service said his parents and other family members also worked at Mount Rainier during their careers.
The Washington State Patrol said Chappell was killed when his vehicle ran off Highway 7 and hit a tree.
It’s been a difficult year for the staff at Mount Rainier National Park. Ranger Nick Hall was killed in a fall during a rescue operation in June. Ranger Margaret Anderson was shot and killed Jan. 1 by a man running a roadblock.
